Male Infertility

A man’s fertility relies on the quantity and quality of his sperm. If the sperm count is low or of poor quality, it is difficult - if not impossible to cause pregancy

Male infertility is diagnosed when, after testing both partners, reproductive problems have been found in the male. In about 1 in 5 infertile couples the problem lies in the male partner.

There are tests that can be performed in order to help identify the cause of the male infertility. Some of the tests that can determine the cause of make infertility are:

  • Hormone Testing - such as testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactine levels
  • Scrotal Ultrasound
  • Post-ejaculation urinalysis - check for infections or possible presence of sperm in urine (retrogade ejaculation)
  • Testicular Biopsy
  • Genetic Tests
  • Transrectal Ultrasound
  • Specialized sperm function tests

While determining the sperm count,  the sperm concentration is checked whether it is above or below 20 million sperm cells per milliliter of ejaculation fluid.

If fertility issues remain unresolved, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is commonly used in combination with in vitro fertilization (IVF) to achieve pregnancy when male infertility is a factor. ICSI involves injecting a single sperm into an egg obtained through IVF. The fertilized egg is then implanted back into the woman. Pregnancy success rates depend on many different factors.

If tests show that there is no sperm production or that other related problems are present, donor sperm can be used to help facilitate conception. In this procedure, donor sperm are obtained from a sperm bank and placed inside the female’s uterus or fallopian tubes through artificial insemination.
